  • by
  • 22 Mar, 2021

In March 2020, the planning committee of the 2019 Lasallian Women's Gathering for the District of Ireland, Great Britain and Malta joined with Fondazione De La Salle Solidarietà Internazionale ONLUS in Rome to plan a webinar for ministries of the District to learn about Lasallian responses to women and girls in our Mission and Lasallian Family.

The webinar was postponed because of the pandemic and the abrupt switch to remote teaching and learning.

We have decided to move forward with the webinar and open the invitation to all Lasallians who wish to participate. We are keeping the event for adults but will be recording the webinar to share with our schools and pastoral centres along with some discussion questions.

We want to express our thanks to the team from Fondazione De La Salle Solidarietà Internazionale ONLUS and our planning committee in the District of Ireland, Great Britain and Malta for their work in pulling this event together, and for those who will be sharing their wisdom and experience.

The event will be on Monday 29, March at 4PM (UK/Irish Time); 5PM (Malta/Rome Time).

Speakers include Angela Matulli who will be discussing ‘Challenges that women and girls face every day accessing their right to education’, while ‘Preventing based violence in Peru’ will be dealt with by Children from Associaion Tarpusunchis.

Maryann Donohue Lynch will speak on ‘Ensuring women’s rights to sanitation’, and Joana Miranda’s topic is ‘Raising awareness on gender based violence in Portugal’.

Students from the La Salle Girl High School Faisalabad, Pakistan, will present on ‘Ensuring girls’ access to education in Pakistan’, and Br Raoul Tarore will discuss ‘Promoting girls education in DR Congo’.

Lasallians throughout the District and beyond are being asked to support the Lasallian Lenten Challenge which is raising funds for the construction of a multi-purpose building at a Lasallian school in Suranam in Southern India.

In promoting the challenge, Br Thomas Walsh from De La Salle College, Waterford, explained that the building will be a fantastic facility for the local school, catering for classes, study, exams, assemblies, dance and gatherings of any sort.

The Lenten Challenge will see staff and students of De La Salle College Waterford and Lasallians around the world complete a 40-day challenge during Lent, involving 40 minutes of exercise over 40 days.

“The cost of the project is €35,000 so we are hoping to raise as much as we possibly can. We are appealing to all Lasallians to support this Lasallian Lenten Challenge and we ask all our students to spread the word and raise as much money as we possibly can,” he explained.

Br Thomas added that Lasallian Projects had intended to visit Suranam in 2020 but due to Covid restrictions this was not possible. It is hoped that the trip will take place this year, but if this is not possible the money raised will be donated to the project.

Anyone from the District interested in taking part in the proposed trip to India in July should contact [email protected].

The District Ireland, Great Britain and Malta Leadership Team, have shared the first of a series of three reflections on Lasallian Community. As you recall our District theme is Lasallian Community: Our Vision, Our Passion and Our Future.

Please consider this document and video as an invitation for all in the Lasallian Family of the District to share in a common reflection on something critical to our Mission and Ethos: Community.

La Salle for Women's Rights | #InternationalWomensDay2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted both the great contributions that women give to society, and the deep inequalities women face every day. Women stand at the front lines of crisis, as health care workers, caregivers, innovators and community organisers and some as the most effective national leaders in fighting the pandemic. At the same time, domestic violence, unemployment and poverty have been dramatically increasing.

We work every day to promote access for and retention of girls and women at all levels of education, throughout the world. Investing in girls’ education transforms communities, countries and the entire world. Girls who receive an education are less likely to be victims of child/adolescent-marriages and more likely to lead healthy, productive lives. They earn higher incomes, participate in the decisions that most affect them, and build better futures for themselves and their communities.

In La Salle, we can count on more than 60,000 women fostering the Lasallian educational mission worldwide. This figure corresponds to the 58.2 percent of our educational and administrative personnel, in other words, over half of the energy, talents and passion that move our institutions and programs forward, benefitting over a million people everyday

Today, legal restrictions have kept 2.7 billion women from accessing the same job as men. Less than 25 per cent of parliamentarians were women, as of 2019. One in three women experience gender-based violence, still. [United Nations]

As La Salle, we refuse all form of discrimination against women, and gender-related violence. We are committed to promote equal opportunities for women and men all over the world.

International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on the condition of women in the world, on progress made in gender equality, and to call for change for an equitable society.

Today, legal restrictions have kept 2.7 billion women from accessing the same job as men. Less than 25 percent of parliamentarians were women, as of 2019. One in three women experience gender-based violence, still. [United Nations]

As La Salle, we refuse all form of discrimination against women, and gender-related violence. We are committed to promote equal opportunities for women and men all over the world.

Stand up with us against inequalities and let’s make 2021 count for women and girls everywhere.

On Thursday February 25th two videoconferences took place in relation to the Commitments of Association organised by the Secretariat of Association. In these meetings we heard a brief testimony of eight Lasallians.
In the PDF file that accompanies this message you can identify them and listen to their testimony in the original language or in its translation into the other official languages. Each video lasts between four and six minutes.
From the Secretariat of Association we would like to thank all those who participated, for their involvement, for such interesting vocational expressions.
The link to share the reflection started that day is still open, if you would like to tell us what has helped you in your journey of Association and commitment, and what structures you consider necessary in the future to help Lasallians in their journey of Association and commitment, do not hesitate to complete the form. https://tinyurl.com/y9kfybo4
