A national survey has shown that part-time work up to 8 hours per week has little impact on successful examination results, but over and above 8 hours per week has a detrimental effect. I would urge all our students to reduce their part-time employment during this period and suspend it totally if possible.

Revising for Exams

We wish all our learners good luck with their studies.

From the Headteacher

I am absolutely committed that every student does their very best in the forthcoming summer exams. It is so important that we encourage our students to work really hard in the next few weeks. We all know the weather is improving, the evenings are getting longer, there is the World Cup to look forward to and so on, but despite all these distractions students should be working every evening during the week to prepare for their exams. I know that with hard work at this stage students can improve their present performance significantly. Students who, for example, have been achieving E grades at GCSE can improve to C grades with effective revision. All students have been given advice on preparing revision timetables. Parents should see that they have a timetable and that this is displayed prominently at home. Please remind your child to revise according to the plan, make sure that the television is switched off, provide refreshments and encourage with rewards at regular intervals! It would be helpful if all the family shared in the pressure that your child will be under by frequently asking how he/she is getting on. You might even want to volunteer to test or to share your knowledge in order to provide further encouragement.

SAM Learning

http://www.samlearning.com

As part of our strive and commitment to raising standards, we are pleased to tell you that the school has recently subscribed for SAM Learning, a top quality on-line learning service that can be used at home and at school. Not only does it allow them to revise on-line, but there are exam questions for them to download, complete and mark online too! All revision that your son/daughter completes is logged and downloaded back on to the school assessment database, ensuring that we can monitor additional revision that your son/daughter undertakes.

SAM Learning usually costs home users £49.99 per year, but learners now have full use of this service totally free of charge. It's useful for learners to take a break from textbooks and try learning on the Internet instead. All that you need to access this excellent resource and make a refreshing change to your son/daughter's revision programme is Internet Access.

Sixth Form

Our Sixth Form students are about to reach another milestone in their educational careers. AS, A2 and GNVQ exams are vital if our students are to fulfil their potential. There is a lot resting on these examinations -entry to advanced GNVQ courses at Colleges of Further Education, entry to our Year 13 for AS students, achieving the grades to take up those conditional places at Universities for our A2 students, and the reward and successful examination results for those of our students about to enter the world of work.

It is essential that all our Sixth Form students manage their revision time at home with guidance and support and in the knowledge that their teaching staff will be available to them during study leave.

In the Upper School
the measures we have taken to aid revision are:
  • A Study Skills Programme run in the PSHE sessions in September and October
  • Materials were handed to students highlighting study skills and revision techniques
  • A booklet 'Preparation for GCSE' handed to students in March. This contains basic information about examination procedures.
  • In the centre of the booklet there is a fourteen week planner which students should be using now. They have been given clear instructions how to use these.
  • Study Skills Day run on March 8th for the majority of students.
  • A comprehensive programme was delivered with a booklet giving a range of revision and study skill strategies.
  • A range of mentoring systems. Individual mentors for some students. Group mentoring sessions on Tuesday mornings.
