Lasallians respond to need in St Helens

Each year at De La Salle School St Helens the whole school gets together in supporting a local charity known as Teardrops. This is hub where the homeless and vulnerable families in St Helens can seek refuge and get help from various agencies.

This year, more than ever, the need to help and feed the vulnerable people of St Helens, rose immensely and Our Lasallian community came together to provide food and luxury hampers for Christmas.

In normal time we would take groups of volunteers to help pack, wrap and distribute parcels but this year we can only donate. It never ceases to amaze everyone at the school the level of generosity of our community.

On December 11th, Ardscoil La Salle Raheny took part in a "Christmas Jumper Day" to raise money for Crumlin Children's Hospital. Staff and students were encouraged to wear festive, Christmas clothing into school before going on a 5km walk around the surrounding area.

Normally at this time of year, a group of our students would go into Dublin City Centre for a day carolling to raise money for charity. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, this was not possible this year. In order to keep up our Christmas tradition of raising money for charity we decided to organise a fun event the whole school could take part in.

Throughout the morning, we played Christmas FM to get both staff and students into the Christmas spirit. After our morning break, all students took part in a 5k walk around the area, in the hope that our Christmas outfits would bring some cheer to the local community.

The day was a great success as we surpassed all our initial goals and raised over €700 for Crumlin Children's Hospital. We'd like to thank everyone for their generous donations.

De La Salle hosted the ‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’ appeal which involved our Christmas dress up day. The school normally does many wonderful fun, festive charity events in the run up to Christmas but many of them couldn’t run due to Covid-19 restrictions. However, the pupils and staff still fully got behind the Christmas non-uniform day and managed to raise over £2,500 for local charities.

December has been filled with Christmas Cheer, kindness, creativity, and charity at St John’s College, Southsea.

Head of Middle School, Mrs Mawson, organised the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child shoebox appeal, and parents and pupils donated enough gifts to fill 70 boxes, bringing joy to children around the world who otherwise wouldn’t have received any gifts this year.

The Christmas Card Competition was a great success, with three winning designs chosen for the SJC Christmas Cards. Thomas in year 4, Bethan in year 8, and Sanjitha had their beautiful designs printed with packs available to purchase. All proceeds are going to Portsmouth Mind charity, helping those in Portsmouth who struggle with their mental health.

Christmas Jumper Day on the last day of term saw some brilliant outfits, with pupils donating to Save the Children.

It was a week of creativity during the last week of term, with Middle School decorating their own Christmas wreaths, creating tags using lino print, and making card stands out of colourful acrylic.

This year, the senior school at De La Salle College Malta decorated one of the big trees on its grounds. Each bauble was brought to school by a student or a staff member, and has their name written on it. This symbolises the coming together as a Lasallian family, even in such difficult and trying times.
